Aphelocoma coerulescens 2
Aug. 6 - Kingsbery Grade (New. lat. 17), 5800 ft., 2.8 mi. S, 1/2 mi. W Genoa,
Douglas Co., Nev. - 2 immatures flew by easy stages up the steep S to SE-facing slope, which is sparsely
dotted with 1 to 60 ft. high Jeffrey pines & has
a "sagebrush" formation of Artemisia tridentata,
Bursia tridentata, & somewhat higher Arctostaphylos
patula. The first one seen was silent & spent
a good deal of time in the manzanitas until I
flushed it out, when it flew on to small pines.
The other came up to investigate & called
the harsh "fainck" note several times. Both
had the central rectrices (1 or 2 pairs) quite gray,
top of head gray brown extending over nape
onto somewhat browner back. The super-
ciliary was evident, the narrow & not pure
white; the necklace seemed to be represented
chiefly by a slight brownish suffusion
at the sides. The blue of wings & part of tail
was pale.
- 4750 ft., 1 mi. S & slightly E Genoa, Douglas Co., Nev.
2 seen in 50 ft. high Fremont cottonwoods along
irrigation ditch by road which skirts W side
of marshy Carson Valley, with low sagebrush
upslope to west. Both were immatures I had
2 central rectrices long, all the others short &
seemingly bluer. The blue of wings & lack
of a distinct necklace were noticeable. Both
of them flew back & forth between trees 100 ft. apart-
