Cogswell 1950 Cyanocitta stelleri 2 Aug. 4 N. side Bear Valley, 4590 ft., Nevada Co., Calif. - about 5 seen in 1 hr. spent in yellow pine - increase cedar - black oak forest edge bordering on, They were very noisy, scolding us from high in the trees - the behavior indicating a pair with fledglings. Aug. 5 lower Truckee Canyon, Sierra Co., Calif. near Nevada line, 1 seen along US Route 40 - in Jeffrey pine, increase cedar (few), mountain mahogany area (where Scrub Jays have also been seen) Aug. 7 (p.m.) near Sugar Bowl Lodge, 7000 ft., 1.2 mi. 55W Donner Pass, Placer Co., Calif. - 5 or 6 seen or heard in 1/2 mile walk thru mod. dense red fir - lodgepole & silver pine forest without significant "edge". Aug. 11 a flight of jays this morning went in a straggling stream almost blue north- ward, across the wet Lowgill meadow and on into this same patch of forest. I counted 10, 7, 5, so then scattered individuals total. lung about 10 more came by. This seems to be a definite movement of a flock, which occurred in the I did not know, Steller's Jay. I could see them over a range of perhaps 3/4 mile maximum, distance so they moved more or less steadily along, only perching for a few seconds now & then. middle late other than this flight, about the usual 1 to 4 were Aug. 5 noted on a majority of, 2 hr. trips afield. Aug. 21 3900 ft., 1 1/2 mi. N, 1 mi. E Truckee, Nevada Co., Calif. 1 seen in arid, open forest of Jeffrey pine & low sagebrush.
