Petrochelidon pyrrhonota
June 20 L. Van Norden, 6780 ft., Placer & Nevada Co., Calif.
I seen flying over meadow E. of lake and I
near horse barns by the dam -- both of
them flying with [illegible], swallows, which met
nearby; but I know of no breeding place
of Cliff Swallows in the Donner Pass region,
although individuals were present in 1948 also
(when a colony in Truckee was destroyed by
house owner knocking down nests).
June 22 Boca Reservoir, 5580 ft., Nevada Co., Calif. -- at least
30 present, flying up and down over sagebrush
& grass slopes near the dam, on which
they are apparently nesting. They also flew
over the Truckee River nearby, later in p.m.
June 25- Sierra Valley, Sierra Co., Calif. -- many seen in &
near Sierraville, near Battley, and N. of those points.
June 27- W. & S. of Reno, Washoe Co., Nev. -- several seen over farm-
land (or over Idlewild Park in W. part of Reno)
- Little Washoe L., 5020 ft., Washoe Co., Nev. - 3+ over.
June 28 Boca Res. [see above] -- about 50 present.
June 30 Soda Springs, 6750 ft., Nevada Co., Calif. -- about 15 on wires
near horse barns below L. Van Norden (cf. June 20).
July 4. I (only!) here. also 1 near E end L. Van Norden.
July 9 Truckee, 5850 ft., Nevada Co., Calif. -- several flying
over river valley E. of town.
July 10 E. side Boca Res. [see above] -- an est. 100+ flying over
sagebrush flat with several grassy swales near
the reservoir.
July 18 N.E. end L. Van Norden, 6800 ft., Placer Co., Calif. - 1 juvenile
on wires with Tree Swallows. 1 Cliff Swallow live on 27 also.
