Hirundo rustica
2
Aug.6 Carson City & Reno areas, Nevada - several
noted at various points along US Route 395.
Aug.7 E. side Boca Res., 5580 ft., Nevada Co., Calif. - 2 still
present near nesting area (see July 10-11).
Aug.9 W & S of Reno, 4500+ ft., Washoe Co., Nevada - about 8
seen while driving highways in -> out of Reno.
Aug.18 Bear Valley, 4575 ft., Placer-Nevada Co. line, Calif. - a
NEST placed on the quite smooth concrete
wall of a new culvert over the Bear River
held 4 large young. One adult came in
and alighted on the edge of the nest; then,
as I walked under the 8-ft. high culvert,
all of them flew out -> up over nearby
meadow. The flight of the young birds
was weak in comparison to the adults,
but they continued on around the meadow
for at least a minute or two. Whether
it was their first flight or not it is in-
posible to say. A second adult
bird (?) showed up when the commotion
of calls from those disturbed began. The
culvert, built within the last ? year or 14 mos,
is much smoother than the usual nest sites selected by this
species.
Aug.23 W & S of Reno, 4500-4600 ft., Washoe Co., Nevada - several
seen along highway in farmland areas (as usual)
and over the now nearly dry Little Washoe Lake, 5020 ft.
- the first there this season on any of our trips.
