Cogswell 1950 Riparia riparia June 25 4550 ft., 1-2 mi. W Reno, Washoe Co., Nev. - Large nesting colony, of several hundred pairs, still located in soft dirt banks N of US highway 40 which runs parallel to SP RR & Truckee River here. The birds do most of their foraging across the road & RR from the nest holes out over the grassy fields along the river. Many are killed by passing autos. They were going in & out of the holes with such slight frequency this p.m. that I think most of them are incubating. July 9 S. end Lake Tahoe, 6230 ft., Eldorado, Calif. - 1+ flew over marshes with several tree swallows. The dark breast band was distinctly seen. July 12 W Reno, Washoe Co., Nev. - birds of the colony described above going in & out holes very much more frequently apparently now have young in nests. Idlewild Park Reno - 1+ flying over Truckee River about 1 mi. from above colony. July 26 1-2 mi. W Reno [see above] - only a few going to & from nesting holes now. (apparently, most of the young have left & adults with them). Aug 5 about 15 seen in air near the burrows. Aug 5 E. end of Reno, 4500 ft., Washoe Co., Nev. - flock of 70(10), including at least some juveniles, were gathering on miles along road thru truck garden & irrigated pastureland about 1 hrs before sunset. Aug 9 1-2 mi. W Reno [see above] - about 5 seen. Aug 23 This colony entirely vacated now.
