June 17 6950 ft., 1 mi. SW Donner Pass, Placer Co., Calif. - 2 seen foraging over small meadow & scattered conifer forest near S.B.R.R. snowsheds.
- 6755 ft., Soda Springs, Nevada Co., Calif. - 2 J, perched on the gable of a small pumphouse below Lake Van Norden Dam, gave a melodious, chuckling warble almost continuously. According to R.B. Ways they nested in one of 2 holes in the edge of the roof of this building in 1949. They forage over the nearby 3+ acre meadow, ski slopes, open forest, & the lake.
June 20 about 5 seen flying or perched on wires in this vicinity. There are 2 barns & some horses just across the road.
E. end Lake Van Norden, 6770 ft., Placer Co., Calif. - 3+ flying about over broad, wet meadow with a few willow thickets & over nearby forest border. They have nested in woodpecker holes in telephone poles here in prior years.
June 23 Bear Valley, 4980+ ft., Placer & Nevada Cos, Calif. - 10+ seen in flight, low over the open grassy meadow surrounded by typical transition zone forest. Some were seen near the black oaks where Violet Greens nested in 1948.
July 4 Lake Van Norden, 6770+ ft., Placer & Nevada Cos, Calif. - 10+ seen, with a probable 2 nesting pairs near the sheep corral in meadow NE of lake & 3+ pairs below the dam; 1 was seen to enter an old woodpecker hole in a tall dead tree trunk at the latter locality.
July 7 Bear Valley, 4980 ft., Nevada Co., Calif. - 6+ seen, including at least 1 brown-backed juncavel on the wing. Perching on same tree as Violet-Greens
