Cogswell 1950 "Journal" 8 Emigrant Gap, N. slope of, (town is on S slope), 5200- 5000 ft., between Highway US 40 & State Route 20, Placer Co., Calif. -- Secs. 31 & 30, R 12 E, T 17 N. VEG. TYPES: (in order, from usual stop at gap it- sel, where S.P.RR. & highway 40 cross) downslope to the north) -- road & other grading (NYack Lodge) talus; montane chaparral (Arctostaphylos patula, Ceanothus cordulatus, C. integerrimus, Prunus emarginata, etc.) with scattered young trees (Quercus kelloggii, Pinus ponderosa, Libocedrus decurrens) coming up through it in lower portions; coniferous forest (Pinus ponderosa, Libocedrus decurrens, Pinus lambertiana, Pseudotsuga taxifolia, Quercus kelloggii), with interstitial & understory of Cornus nuttallii in moist draws, & Acer macrophyllum, Acer glabrum locally; forest very dense at 4900' VISITS: June 17 (no stop), 23; July 7, 21; Aug. 4, Aug. 18. Freel Peak, 10,900 ft. (at summit), Carson Range, SE of Lake Tahoe, Eldorado-Alpine Co. boundary, Calif. VEG. TYPES (on portion visited by us): alpine fell-fields & cliffs (with very little herbaceous veg- eation in this, apparently a very dry, year); subal- pine forest (Pinus albicaulis) visible on slopes below; krummholz (Pinus albicaulis) in cirque between this peak & Job's Sister (q.v.). VISIT: July 23 Galena Creek Camp -- see p. 3a. (omitted here by error). Geiger Lookout (on Geiger Grade), 5500-5560 ft., approx. 2 mi. E Steamboat Springs, Washoe Co., Nev. -- along Nevada Route 17 on W slope Virginia Range (labelled Washoe Mts. on some maps). VEG. TYPES: pigmy conifer woodland (Pinus cembro- ides monophylla, Juniperus californica utahensis) with low sparse shrubs in interstices (Artemisia tridentata, Chrysothamnus sp., Ephedra nevadensis, Eriogonum, etc.) and several nearby islands (on altered andesite rocks) of sparse, low pine woodland (Pinus jeffreyi, & almost nothing else); dry grassland (narrowly in canyon & on "mesa" just above lookout); Great Basin sagebrush formation (A. tridentata, Purshia tridentata, Chryso- thamnus sp., Prunus andersonii) on alluvial fan & very base of the "Grade" VISITS: June 27; July 12, 26; Aug. 9, Aug. 23 (this last trip did not include the "lookout" & vicinity, but only the sparse pinyon-juniper area where it thins out to sagebrush of foothill.
