Cogswell 1950 Tachycineta thalassina June 23 - N. side Bear Valley, 4585 ft., Nevada Co., Calif. - NONE seen about the large, dead topped black oaks at the border of this large meadow where a colony of 30+ was found in 1948. Tree Swallows are present, however. July 7 Several (up to 10) were seen perched on the dead branches of a black oak near, the center of this same meadow, about 200 yards from the 1948 nest trees. Included in this was at least one brownish-backed juvenile. They all foraged by occasional flights out over the tall grass of the meadow which is now becoming fairly dry. I have no records of this species closer to Donner Pass than this, altho it is common at several points about Lake Tahoe on the E. side July 9 S. end Lake Tahoe, 6240 ft., El Dorado Co., Calif - 1+ flying about over conifer forest, marshes, & lake shore. Certainly greatly outnumbered by Tree Swallows. July 19 N.E. side L. Van Norden, 6780 ft., Placer Co., Calif. - 1 adult and 1+ juvenile, flying and perching on wires near sheep corral by large meadow - accompanying Swallows. This sp. does not breed at this alt. anywhere in the Donner Pass region so far as I know, so these are probably post-breeding wanderers. July 21 N. side Bear Valley [see above] - about 20 in vicinity of same black oaks. Several, brown-backed. Aug. 1 E. end L. Van Norden [see above] - 1 flying over meadow. Aug. 4 N. side Bear Valley [see above] - about 30 present, including juveniles.
