Eremophila alpestris
June 22 valley just E Boca Res., 5600 ft., Nevada Co. Calif. - many (luts p.m.) seen o heard singing in the open sagebrush, auto-
lope brush o grass on the "flat" near the reservoir.
June 25 Sierra Valley, 4900 ft. +, Silvera Ounas Cos. Calif. - very (a.m.) common along roadsides in sagebrush areas
(higher, dry portions of broad valley). Many were
singing from the air or on fence posts. In some
stretches of the road N of Battle about every 5th
or 6th fence post had a lark on it.
June 28 E of Boca Res., 5600 ft.; Nevada Co. Calif. - a NEST con-
(a.m.) taining 4 young in pin feathers was found here,
being placed in a depression in bare ground with
1/3 to 1/2 inch desert pavement stones o some sparse
grass o a few small lupines right nearby. The
general site is in the open about 5 feet from
a 17 ft. high sagebrush bush in an area less
than 15% covered with same. This is one of the
sparser, grassier sections of a broad flat, mostly
typical "sagebrush" vegetation.
Photograph (50 - - ) taken of the nest o young.
Many adults are still about; songs heard.
July 10 " " " " " " & 1 bird (a.m.) watched as it sang from 250+ ft. up in the air for
over 2 minutes. The nest noted above is now
empty, the young probably having flown.
July 11 one adult I seen carrying a pale, smooth cater-
4:30 p.m. pillar to a nearly grown fledgling near this nest.
The young one was well feathered with streaked breast &
short tail, but could fly very well.
