Nuttallornis borealis
2
July 5 - 7150ft., 3/4 mi. W Donner Pass, Placer Co., Calif. - 3 seen in same area as on June 2 (see notes above, where Jay chased).
July 8 On a trip to this same spot today one of the group located a NEST in a horizontal branch of spruce, some 50 ft. from the ground, 12 ft. out from the trunk. The pair of flycatchers was again dive-bombing at a Steller's Jay which made repeated efforts to hop up the 'ladder' of branches in an adjacent tree. The flycatchers came swooping thru the spaces between branches with bills snapping; & the jay always retreated around the trunk. Foraging by the flycatchers was done over nearby huckleberry oak, manza-nita, & little cherry shrub thickets, from perches 30 to 90 ft. up.
July 9 7800ft., 21/2 mi. N, 31/4 mi. W Reed Peak, Eldorado Co., Calif. - 1 "singing" from sparse lodgepole pine - red fir forest with much low shrub growth all about & some aspens. moderately steep slope; more or less NW-facing.
July 11 Head of Serena Cr. Canyon, 6700 ft. Placer Co., Calif. - 2 "singing" from tall Jeffrey pine - lodgepole pine - red & white fir forest on SW-facing slope.
July 19 7300 ft., 1.4 mi. SSW Donner Pass, Placer Co., Calif. - 2 "singing"
July 20 (what-peeves-you) on a 1st mile early a.m. trip to the Sugar Bowl. (one probably same individ as July 1, 17)
July 25}
July 27} 7150 ft., 3/4 mi. W Donner Pass, Placer Co., Calif. - the pair still active near the NEST noted on July 8; contents still unknown.
