Cogswell 1950 Muttallornis borealis June 17 - 7100 ft., 1.3 mi. 55W Donner Pass, Placer Co., Calif - 1 "singing" ("what peeves you" call) from forest bordering alder-filled clearing on steep N. facing slope. Still much snow over this slope, even in open, a very deep in forest. June 21 - 7150 ft., 3/4 mi. W Donner Pass, Placer Co., Calif - a pair were making frequent, ferocious, bell-snapping sallies at 2 Steller's Jays in a clump of [illegible] sparse, tall firs next to shrub thickets on S. facing slope. This is the type of open forest (Jeffrey Pine, lodgepole pine, white fir) with much chaparral, in which this species was most often found in 1948. Presumably this pr. has a nest nearby. The jays retreated thru the thick fir foliage & finally flew off upslope. Sugar Bowl, 7100 + ft., 1.4 mi. 55W Donner Pass - 2 birds to gather in tall conifers near cleared ski-slopes. Snow still deep over all forested areas except about bases of trees & in openings. Cleared slopes more than half bare. June 24 - W. end Donner Lake, 5950 ft., Nevada Co., Calif - 3 seen in 1 hr. 20 min. spent in lodgepole pine - red fir forest with scattered Jeffrey pines & strip of aspen & willows along stream. One foraged a great deal from the lateral branches of aspens near the stream. The whole area is a flat valley, about 1/3 mi. wide, in marked contrast to the steep slopes usually frequented by this species. July 1 - 7100 ft., 1.3 mi. 55W Donner Pass - The bird noted on June 17 July 17 still calls regularly from the forest border on the N. facing slopes of Duney & Crown Nest peaks.
