Donner Pass, 1/3 - 2/3 mi. S of, 7100 (7050 ?) - 7200 ft
Placer Co., Calif. -- (= NE to SE of Mary Lake, in
W edge of Sec. 21, R 15 E, T 17 N.
VEG. TYPES: patches of coniferous forest (Abies
magnifica, Pinus murrayana, Pinus jeffreyi, Pinus
monticola, Tsuga mertensiana) alternating with subal-
pine chaparral on rocky slopes (Quercus vaccinifolia,
Arctostaphylos nevadensis, Prunus emarginata, Spiraea
densiflora, etc.) and small thickets of Populus trem-
uloides in moist draws; riparian thickets (Alnus ben-uifolia, Salix sp.) near lake; small lake (artificial,
but of 184 years existence). Several cabins along
route followed near the lake.
VISITS: June 29 (twice); July 7, 13, 18; Aug. 11,
24, 25 (twice), 26.
Donner Pass, 3/4 - 1 mi. W of, -- see "S. slope Signal Hill
Donner Pass to Reno ("enroute"), via U.S. Route 40 thru
Truckee, down Truckee Canyon, thru Verdi, Nevada.
VEG. TYPES: vary from similar to last 2 described
near the pass, to arid conifer forest (Pinus jeffreyi,
Pinus murrayana, Abies magnifica, the latter 2 sp.
dropping out soon) both W & E of Truckee, this with
more & more sagebrush formation (A. tridentata, Pur-shia tridentata, Chrysothamnus sp.) in interstices &
along preclimax slopes in gentler topography E of
Truckee. The narrower canyon which follows (Hirsch-dale's to beyond Floriston) has various stages of
forest regrowth from fires & logging, with a low,
dense chaparral of at least partly deciduous species,
and with Populus tremuloides thickets over seepages.
Cercocarpus ledifolius occurs as pioneer shrub on
volcanic talus slopes up to at least Union Mills,
5900 ft., and on benches in lower Truckee Canyon.
On NE facing slopes in canyon, there is a scattering
of Abies concolor & Libocedrus decurrens mixed with
the widespread dominant Pinus jeffreyi, and near this
same area patches of tall shrubs (Cercocarpus, Prunus
demissa, Prunus emarginata, Arctostaphylos patula)
give the forest a woodland character (Magpies, Scrub
Jays, Brewer's Blackbird seen regularly here).
Riparian growth changes from Populus tremuloides near
Donner Lake, to P. trichocarpa & Salix sp. below Truck-ee, to Populus fremontii & Salix sp. before Reno is
reached. Upland areas from near Verdi on to Reno are
mixed low sagebrush-grass formation, the lowlands being
grassland maintained by irrigation.
VISITS: June 27; July 12, 26; Aug. 5, 9, 23.
Also, the upper portions at higher altitudes were tra-versed by car on all trips to Boca Reservoir (q.v.) &
Prosser Cr., Sierra Valley, & Little Truckee River (q.v
(on these last, only on this route as far as Truckee)
