Cogswell 1950 Empidonax hammondii June 17 "Cowgill meadow" 7000 ft., 1.2 mi. SSW Donner Pass, Placer Co., Calif. 1+ Empidonax of the "ke-sic, tsuup, peekt" variety sang from leafless willows (!) as well as from young red firs which occur scattering in this wet meadow near a giant red fir for which was the hangout of a pair in 1948. The solid red fir - white & lodgepole pine forest is 300+ feet away. I think these are all of this species here, but in absence of a specimen or nest, I suppose they could be [illegible] Wrightii. The birds sang from the tops of the tall firs in 1948 - may be foraging lower now because of the remaining deep snow & cold weather. June 20-5 of Norden, 6800 ft., Placer Co., Calif. - 2+ similar songs heard in more open lodgepole pines - Jeffrey pine forest near large Van Norden meadow & few small chaparral patches. this "P or Wrightii?" June 21 - Sugar Bowl, 7200 ft., 1.4 S by W Donner Pass Placer Co., Calif. - Similar song from a bird in tall red firs & white pines over snowbanks with scattered bare areas. June 23 - "Cowgill meadow"s forest 5 of it. - on a p.m. visit, over same area as covered on a.m. of June 17 & 20, 2 birds were heard but they gave only the single "ke-sic" call at this time of day. June 29 - 7200 ft., ½ mi. S Donner Pass Placer Co., Calif. - 1 giving similar song from dense path of red & white firs near open tree & shrub-covered slopes. Judging from the Wrightii col- lected on June 21, these birds could be either species. I am still at a loss as to how to distinguish them out of hand.
