July 28 Big Bend Camp Std., 5750 ft., on S. Fork Yuba R., Placer Co., Calif.- 3 heard and/or seen at one time in area of tall, dense forest of white fir,
Jeffrey pines, lodgepole pine. * One was an imm.
? with red suffusion over top of its dingy
white head. This bird was quite tame ?
fussed back & forth on a horizontal limb
of a pine for many minutes as 16 people
watched it from 40 ft. below.
July 31 Sugar Bowl Lodge, 6900 ft., 1.2 mi. SSW Donner Pass, Placer Co., Calif.- 1 flew over, ? alighted in edge of
red fir & pine forest clump. -> 2 together here on Aug. 8,
aug.8} aug.1 6800 ft. near Norden R.R. Stn., Placer Co., Calif- 1 in sparse forest of lodgepole pine with a few red
firs near edge of broad meadow.
aug.18 Yuba Pass, 5800+ ft. [see p. 1] - NEST in pole now
abandoned (held large young 4 weeks ago); calls of
this sp., probably of an adult, heard nearby.
N. side Bear Valley [see p. ] - 1 heard.
aug.24 S. slope, 7150 ft., 3/4 mi. W Donner Pass, Placer Co., Calif- 1
in patchy forest of red & white fir, Jeffrey &
lodgepole pine on steep slope mostly shrub covered.
aug.25 7100+ ft., 1/2 mi. S Donner Pass, Placer Co., Calif.- 1 in
similar, but more continuous, forest on W slope
of Donner Peak.
