Cogswell 1950 Dendrocopos villosus 2 middle late July + early Aug near Sugar Bowl Lodge, L. Van Norden & other loc's. in Summit Valley SW & W Donner Pass, Placer Co. met with fairly frequently (but not on every trip into forest by any means). one long call heard on July 25th. [Less conspicuous in late Aug]. Aug.5 Cisco Grove, 5650 ft. [see p.1] - 1 heard in tall cotton woods. aug.16 Aug.10 W.end Donner L., 5950 ft. Nevada Co., Calif. - 2 seen in lodgepole & Jeffrey pines where scattered (with aspens) along inlet stream. - Ice Lakes Camp Ground, 6700 ft. Placer Co., Calif - 2 in lodgepole pine - red fir forest of moderate density. Aug.23 - Galena Cr. Camp, 6600 ft. Carson Range, Washoe Co. New. - 1 ♂ (ad.) foraging on trunks of Jeffrey pines in the rather dense stand of pines, white fir, & black cottonwood on the boaldery stream cut "Jan" at mouth of Galena Cr. canyon.
