Cogswell 1950 Sphyrapicus varius 2 "Signal Hill" July 8 7100+ ft. 3/4 mi. W Donner Pass, Placer Co., Calif - 1 flew across several hundred yards of brushy sparsely forested mountainside, alighting on trunk of a tall white fir (abies concolor). July 9 7700 ft. 1/2 mi. NW High Meadow, Carson Range, Eldorado Co, Calif - 2 in open ff Jeffrey pine, white fir, [illegible] pine, with stringers of aspen along stream. July 13 7100 ft. SE side Mary Lake, near Donner Pass, Placer Co., Calif - 1 juvenile (brown-headed) seen in broken-topped ff in wide "ski trail" swath thru denser forest of red (+ few white) fir, lodgepole & silver pines. This bird stayed almost motionless in typical vertical clinging posture for over 20 minutes. This is very near the locale of the Rosenbaum's observations of June 26. July 19 near Norden R.R. Sta., 6800 ft., Placer Co., Calif - 1 adult seen drumming on metal band at top of a telephone pole over willow thickets near edge of lodgepole pine - red fir forest. (same spot as on June 20) Aug. 1 1 adult seen in this same general area. Aug. 3 near Sugar Bowl Lodge, 7000 ft., 1.2 mi. SSW Donner Pass, Placer Co., Calif - 2 juveniles seen in red fir - lodgepole & silver pine forest. Aug. 4 N. slope, 5000 ft., NE Emigrant Gap, Placer Co., Calif. fresh sapsucker work on the stems of a young trees macrophyllum here were of the "lattice" type, i.e. enlarged rectangles open up in series, a narrow strips between them with bark remaining. Sap oozed from many of them & attracted numerous small fleas.
