Cogswell 1950 Sphyrapicus varius June 20 near RR Sta., 6800 ft, Norden, Placer Co. Calif. - about 9 a.m. one flew into tall Jeffrey Pines in open mixed stand of Jeffrey & Lodgepole Pines. It called a few times, then dropped almost to the ground alighting on [illegible] stem of a willow in the 8 ft. high thicket falling a low wet spot here. The stem it utilized did not appear over 1/2 inch diameter. as we approached to check just how it managed to cling there, the bird flew on to another willow clump 200ft away, perching crosswise of a sloping stem there. It soon hopped up, wood- pecker fashion onto a more vertical willow stem - still small in diameter. A few minutes later, it flew to a nearby telephone pole & drummed intermittently for several minutes. June 21 - E base Disney Peak, 1.3 mi SSW Donner Pass, Placer Co.
