Colaptes cafer -3
Aug. 11 Big Bend Camp Ground, 5800 ft. [see p.1] - long call
heard from 1 bird here today.
Aug. 21 Grosser Cr., 5650 ft. 1 1/3 mi. E, 3 1/2 mi. N Truckee,
Nevada Co, Calif - 1 perched for several minutes
(at least) on 25 ft. high, dead-topped willow on
grazed grassy flat by the creek. Open Jeffrey
pine forest (or woodland) or low sagebrush
cover adjacent slopes.
mid Aug.
Aug. 24-25 near Sugar Bowl Lodge, 7000 ft., 1, 2 mi. SSW Donner
Pass, Placer Co, Calif - 1 heard or seen on several
dates in the red fir - lodgepole pine - silver
pine forest or strings of it on the ski
slopes. No long calls heard, however.
In general, for the whole season,
the Flicker seemed to be less common
than in 1948. Certainly several nesting
areas occupied 2 yrs. ago were without
birds this year - e.g., at L. Van Norden
dam, w end Donner L., and Angela Lake.
