Cogswell 1950 Colaptes cafer June 21 7200 ft. 1 mi. W Donner Pass, Placer-Nevada co., Calif. - 1 in open Jeffrey Pine - white fir forest on steep S. facing slope. June 22 7000 ft. 3/4 mi. E Soda Springs, Nevada co., Calif. - 1 in similar habitat on S.W. facing slope near denser forest (-lodgepole pine). N.E. end Boca Reservoir, 5600 ft. Nevada co., Calif. - 1 in open arid type Jeffrey Pine forest at border of open sagebrush. June 23 Bear Valley, 4580+ ft. Placer, Nevada co., Calif. - 3 seen in open "forest-border" habitat around broad grassy meadow. The trees used were yellow pine, Incense cedar, Black oak, white alder, a cottonwood along stream. One bird went into a nest hole in a tall cottonwood stub. June 25 Truckee to Sierraville, Sierra co., Calif. - about 5 seen in arid Jeffrey Pine forest along State Highway 89. U.S. Highway 395 near Calif. - Nevada state line, Washoe co., Nev. - one flew across open low sagebrush country without a tree or tall bush in sight. It went down toward an arroyo with steep banks, which may have held some water. There were 2 rows of short telephone poles nearby -- the only "woodpecker" substrate in sight. June 27 Truckee Meadows 5 of Reno, Washoe co., Nev. - 2 seen in farmland with tall cottonwood trees around some field borders June 29 7100 ft. 1/2 mi. S Donner Pass, Placer co., Calif. - long "yip-yip-yip" series of calls heard in open lodgepole pine-red & white fir forest. June 30 5800 ft. Big Bend, S Fork Yuba River, Placer co., Calif. - long call (both a.m. p.m.) heard in tall, old forest of Jeffrey & lodgepole pine, white fir, and N. White Pine. There are cleared shrubby slopes nearby. This particular bird weavers in pitch but was the same way here in 1948 - it was a stoker for sure.
