Selasphorus rufus

Aug. 3 near Sugar Bowl Lodge, 7000 ft., 1.2 mi. SSW
Donner Pass, Placer Co., Calif. - Still numerous.
Aug. 16 I had campers observing again, Mr. Wely
& Mr. Guest turning in one of the best
reports yet - as one would expect from
their serious attitude & at least partly
scientif[ic] background. Both are high
school teachers. [See sheets attached
to this page]
Their original
The male they observed
was the latest date for an adult recorded
in the region this summer. I saw none later than Aug. 2.

Augusts
Donner Pass & Ice Lakes region, 6700 - 7000+ ft.
Placer Co., Calif. - ?? & imm. ?? still common,
beginning to feed on scarlet Gilia which
is in increasing bloom & (on "Signal Hill")
on thistles.
Aug. 24
"Signal Hill" 7100 ft., 3/4 mi. W Donner Pass, Placer Co,
Calif. - About 15 seen in same area as mentioned
on July 25 & Aug. 2. They are now feeding almost
exclusively on thistles, altho those near the
lodge (where there are no thistles) are growing
scarcer with the waning of columbine
& scarlet Gilia.
Aug. 26 near Sugar Bowl Lodge [see above] - Still a few
present, but numbers are decidedly down
over 2 weeks ago (or even 1 week ago).
