Cogswell 1950 Selasphorus rufus 1 July 1 near Sugar Bowl Lodge, 7000 ft., 1.2 mi. SSW Donner Pass, Placer Co. Calif - a (first I've noted this season) buzzed about the willow thickets of the wet meadow. A number of elephants snouts are in bloom, but little else yet in the way of tubular flowers here. July 4 C and Lake Van Norden, 6770 ft., Placer Co., Calif - 1 (?) flew across the ½ mile willow meadow with or thru the willow thickets near the N edge. July 8 7100 ft., 3/4 mi. w Donner Pass, Placer Co., Calif - 3 ♂♂ and 1 dull one (?) or im. ♂ ?) seen in herb. felled open- ing at border of tree clumps & tall shrub thickets. July 11 near Sugar Bowl Lodge [see above] - still not numerous, 2 ♂♂ seen at border of cleared ski slope. July 17 much more numerous now, the ♀♀ & im. ♂♂ outnumbering the ad. ♂♂ for the first time this season. about 15 seen in 1 hr. trip over ½ mi. of forest meadow. July 24 Still more numerous, the flowers have in- creased, particularly the columbines. July 23 "Signal Hill" [see July 8] - about 10 seen in same adng. 7 4 acre clearing or vicinity, feeding at columbina- fir woods. s July 31 near Sugar Bowl Lodge [see above] - about 20 seen on 2 hr. trip along ½ mile of meadow bordering forest. Total nos. do not seem to be as high as in 1948 at this same time. The floral spread on the cleared ski slope is also less conspicuous.
