Cogswell 1950 Chordeiles minor 4 July 7 (cont.) At least 3 other ? nighthawks were seen & heard in the same area whence this ? came. The call note given by all these ? by the ? when diving on the ? was the usual, strident "k-peent"; but the ? was also heard to utter a recognizable grunt note, altho it was much softer & seemingly lower pitched. July 10 (dusk) ? still incubating 2 eggs on this NEST. She flew away after a diversionary display. July 11 (early p.m.) E. side Boca Res., 5600 ft., Nevada Co., Calif.-another NEST discovered (by almost stepping on it) with ? incubating 2 eggs. It is placed on tan-colored gravel in midst of scattered, gray deal branches of bushes. The area is a broad flat covered only with sparse sagebrush & antelope brush with sparser grass. Open Jeffrey pine forest is on slopes 1500 ft away. (cf. activity in this area on eve of June 22). July 13 7250 ft., ΒΌ mi. N Donner Pass, Nevada Co., Calif.- ? still incubating on NEST (6th day since 1st egg laid). July 19 Sugar Bowl Lodge, 7000 ft., 1,2 mi. SSW Donner Pass, Placer Co., Calif.- 9+ counted over meadow & cleared ski slopes on N & NE sides of Disney Mtn. These are the first noted here in evenings, altho the nesting areas are only a mile away. They seem to forage over those cooler, N-facing forested slopes only on certain evenings, & apparently never early in the season.
