but still glistening eyes. The camouflage was
much better than that of 4 on the June 21 nest,
when we finally drove her off, after care-
ful approach to within 8 ft.; she fluttered
only briefly along the gravelly ground &
came to a stop on a sloping boulder, with
her wings still outspread against the rock.
when approached again she repeated the
procedure, but this time took to the
air & circled the vicinity several times
before alighting cross-wise (!) on the
limb of a 30 ft. high Jeffrey pine about
100 + ft from the nest & down slope.
she faced into the rather brisk evening
breeze & seemed to have no difficulty
[now 2]
holding this perch. The eggs were of
almost exactly the same hues & pattern
as the large gravel pieces about the
nest.
Just as we were leaving, after 4
had been off about 10 min., the 5 drew
closer (he had been "peenting" over open &
brushy slopes in distance) & began power
diving low over the nest area, swerving
to chase the 4 when she flew slightly.
He was not "booming" here, or at least
not doing the pull-out; but was apparently
trying to drive the 4 back on the nest.
after about 4 such swoops, she went
to the nest while we watched & he
immediately mounted & ceased swooping.
