Cogswell 1950 Chardeiles minor 2 June 22 - Boca Reservoir vicinity, 5550-5700 ft., Nevada Co., Calif. (just before dusk) 30+ hawking about over open sagebrush flat & Jeffrey Pine forest; many called "spee-wt" at frequent intervals. One was seen & heard "booming". June 25 1980 ft. 3/4 mi. N Battley, Sierra Co., Calif - 3+ flying about (mid-a.m.) over open Jeffrey Pine forest bordering sagebrush. June 27 Little Washoe Lake, 5020 ft., Washoe Co., Nev. - 5+ flying (late a.m.) high over sagebrush & marshes of valley just E of [illegible] June 30 Big Bend on S. Fork Yuba River, 5730 ft., Placer Co., Calif - 1 heard in mid p.m., probably flying over some of the more open brushy cut-over slopes (we were in dense forest at the time) July 1 5400 ft., 3 mi. ENE Emigrant Gap, Nevada Co., Calif - 1 heard calling over brushy, sparsely forested N slope about 8 p.m. July 6 7250 ft., 1/4 mi. N Donner Pass, Nevada Co., Calif - A NEST depression containing 1 egg being incubated by a very demonstrative & was reported by July 7 2 campers & the & photographed by Dr. Lloyd Gingles (color movies) July 7 I visited this "nest", which is in coarse, (ceb) granite gravel & slab debris on a gentle W-facing slope just W of the actual boulders of the Sierran crest - which drops off to Donner L. valley on the east. The site is in full sun all day long so far as I can see, altho a sparse juniper 60 ft SE might possible provide early morning shade.
