Carson City, 4700 ft., Ormsby Co., Nev. -- plaza of the
State Capitol (one small block) and the highways S &
N of town were only areas in which observations were
made.
VEG. TYPES: plaza -- exotic broad leaved trees of
various kinds, Populus fremontii, shaded grass below
tree canopy; highways near town -- dry or irrigated
grassland; Great Basin sagebrush formation on all
upland slopes (see Aphelocoma caeruleascens).
VISITS: Aug. 6
Carson Valley, W. side, 4800-4700 ft., Douglas Co.,Nev.
-- coverage was only along road thru Walleys Hot Sprgs;
Genoa & north toward Carson City.
VEG. TYPES: Great Basin sagebrush formation (Artemisia tridentata, Purshia tridentata, Prunus andersonii, & few other shrubs, sparse dry grasses & forbs);
dry or irrigated grassland (bits here & there); marshes in distance below road; irrigation ditch bordered
by tall grasses & scattered Populus fremontii trees.
VISITS: Aug. 6
Daggett Pass, 7450 ft. (at summit), Carson Range E of
S. end Lake Tahoe, Douglas Co., Nev.
VEG. TYPES: semi-arid conifer forest (Pinus jeffreyi, Pinus murrayana, Abies magnifica) with broken
but abundant shrub understory (Ceanothus cordulatus,
Arctostaphylos nevadensis, etc.) merging into more
arid conifer - sagebrush woodland (Pinus jeffreyi,
Artemisia tridentata, Purshia tridentata, Arctostaphylos glauca patula) on steep E. slope of range, and into
pine-fir forest (Pinus jeffreyi, Abies concolor) in
Haines Creek canyon, down which the road rund just
before reaching Carson Valley.
VISIT: Aug. 6
Galena Creek Camp, 6600 ft., in mouth of Galena Cr.
canyon, E. base Carson Range NE Lake Tahoe, Washoe Co.
Nevada. -- camp area is justW Nevada Route 27.
VEG. TYPES: on alluvial fan-- mixed conifer & broad
leaved forest (Pinus jeffreyi, Abies concolor, Populus
fremontii) with openings filled with shrubs (Prunus sp
Ceanothus cordulatus, Arctostaphylos glauca, Ceanothus
velutinus) or tumbled, waterworn boulders; bits of
riparian thickets (Salix sp.) along turbulent stream.
VISITS: (lunch stop on our all day trips with
campers)-- June 27; July 12, 26; Aug. 9, 23.
