Asio otus (wilsonianus)
June 25 4950 ft. 2 mi. W Vinton, Plumas Co., Calif.- 1 dead on road
near 2+ acre patch of short willow trees along
drainage in a broad
grassy valley. The carcass was already infested
with maggots so I did not save it.
July 31 Sugar Bowl Lodge, 7000 ft., 1.2 mi. SSW Donner Pass,
Placer Co., Calif.- 1 found in dense area
of red fir, silver pine, lodgepole pine forest
just N. of lodge; it was being scolded by
a mob of small birds, including 2+ Bobus
(whose calls first attracted me to it), some
Junicos, chickadees, Audubon warblers, etc.
The owl was seen both while perched and
in flight. This is almost the identical spot
where one was seen in 1948 (July 22, Aug.6),
the whole surrounding area being of coniferous
close
forest with cleared or meadow areas quite
Aug.10 I seen in same area under like conditions.

Aug.16 Mrs. B. Nielsen, while visiting camp today, found
the owl perched quietly about 45 ft. up in
a 60+ ft. lodgepole pine amid close growing
group of same. Some 40 or 50 people turned
out to see the bird, which just sat on the
limb next to the trunk looking down at us.
no small birds scolding it. 4 pellets
found nearby were of size indicating this
bird. I collected them (uncatalogued) for
possible later study.
