Bubo virginianus
Aug. 12 - Drosser Cr., 5650 ft., 2 mi. E, 3 1/2 mi. N Truckee, Nevada Co., Calif. - About 1 hr. after dark one was found on the cross-arm of a telephone pole over the grassy valley along State Route 89 here. It flew off across the valley into or beyond large willow thickets. There is arid Jeffrey pine forest on nearly slopes & sagebrush on higher ground fronting on the valley. The bird was silent.
This is our only record for the summer - none heard on any of our about 5 or 6 nocturnal expeditions to seemingly suitable habitat!
