Coyssell 1950 Larus californicus June 20 Lake Van Norden, 6770 ft. Placer - Nevada Cos., Calif. - 1 resting on stump near middle of lake. Not seen on subsequent days. June 22 Boca Reservoir, 5350 ft. Nevada Co. Calif. - 150+ on or flying over the water & nearby sagebrush flats. Most were in adult or 2nd year plumage, a few in 1st year. Many were gathered on logs floating near the east shore, but all flew when I approached & resettled farther out on the water. With no island in the lake it does not seem a likely nesting area. June 24 Donner Lake, 5930 ft. Nevada Co., Calif. - 1 ad. (or 2nd year bird) resting on water of this 2 1/2 mi. long lake. June 27 Little Washoe Lake, 5020 ft. Washoe Co. Nev. - 3 gulls circling high over marshes - probably this species. June 28 E. side Boca Reservoir - only about 30 seen on briefer (a.m.) coverage of 1/4 of reservoir (cf. June 22) July 4 Donner Lake - 5 (2+ ads., 1# 1yr. old) on water & flying up & down near S & E ends of lake. July 7,8 L. Van Norden, 6770 ft. [see above] - 1 adult. July 10 E. side Boca Res. [see above] - only about 10 seen today, but ad., 2-year, & 1-year old plumages were included. July 13 Donner Pass, 7200 ft. Placer-Nevada Cos., Calif. - flock of 5 seen flying W. through the pass, only 20-300 ft. above ground, in p.m. mid July Lake Van Norden & Donner L. - 1-2 at a time on different days included ad. & 1-yr old plumages. July 24 Boca Res. [see above] - about 50 seen, including 1, 2, & 3+ year olds - but none of this year's young.
