Steganopus tricolor
June 25 4980 ft. 1 mi. N Battley, Sierra Co. Calif. - at least 4
♂♀ flew around the heads of 4 of us who
waded out across the wet sedge-meadow
land here. These scolding birds, obviously
with territories, if not nests, nearly would
sometimes come as close as 8 ft. from us. When
nearing us they would pull up in a brief
stall, raise the head & neck, open the bill
& emit a ridiculous puffed grunt or
"peent" sound. This would be repeated
every 30 to 50 feet or so while they
zig-zagged or circled around us. A 1/2
hour search yielded no nests. I saw no
♀♀, but other observers also present claim they
saw 1+.
4890 ft. Sierra Valley Ranch, 7 mi N Sierraville Sierra
Co. Calif - Similar behavior on the part of at
least 3 ♂♀ in the very extensive marshy
pastureland here.
July 26 Little Washoe L., 5020 ft. Washoe Co. Nev. - 1 group of 5
& a few scattered individuals. Included were
some in such a streaked plumage that I thought
(from a distance) they were sandpipers (= min.?)
Aug. 6 N. end Washoe L., 5010 ft, Washoe Co. Nev. - 2 admixed in
a flock of Northerns.
Aug. 9 Little Washoe L. [see above] - an est. 400 present
on the now considerably reeded, weed-filled lake.
Aug. 23 200 left here today. Migrants, obviously.
