Cogswell 1950 "Journal" 2 American River Canyon road (cont.) VISITS: July 11, July 28, Aug. 20 (includes long trip all way to Placer Co. Big Trees (q.v.), Aug.22. Angela Lake, 7250 ft., 1/2 mi. N Donner Pass, Nevada Co., Calif. (= Southern Pacific Lake no. 1 of local resi- dents, since Angela plus small lake just S of it as shown on topo map are now confluent due to dam placed below latter). forest of VEG. TYPES: sparse, patchy, lodgepole & Jeffrey pines, with red firs in most humid situations also, and scattered Sierra juniper on rockier ones; much low shrubbery in the wide spaces between trees, is mostly Quercus vaccinifolium, Arctostaphylos neva- densis, & Ceanothus cordulatus, with Cassiope quite abundant near the several small lakes in the area; the ridge top (Sierran crest) here consists of many huge rounded (glaciated) granite outcroppings, with gravelly hollows between & the vegetation noted above. VISITS: July 13 (but see also Donner Pass, N of) Bear Valley, 4570-4600 ft., in Nevada & Placer Cos. along State highway 20, Calif. (T 17 N, in Secs. 25 of R 11 E and Sec. 30 of R 13 E). VEG. TYPES: dense forest (Pinus ponderosa, Libo- cedrus decurrens, Quercus kelloggii, & few Pseudo- tsuga taxifolia); forest border (with many young pines or firs & scattered very large Quercus kelloggii) open meadow (grasses to 3 ft. high, plus various forbs in drier or more heavily grazed portions) with columns of the "forest border" types about several outcrops (residual boulders) of granite; a few large Acer macrophyllum & much more abundant shrub under- s tory in forest bordering meadow on SE. VISITS: June 17, 23; July 7, 21; Aug. 4, 18. Big Bend Camp Ground, 5750 - 5900 (latter on slope N of camp ground), along S. Fork Yuba River, in Sec.28, T 17 N, R 13 E, Placer Co., Calif. (approx. 11 mi. W Donner Pass). VEG. TYPES: a few acres of tall dense forest, the trees being of many ages (= climax ?)(Pinus pond- erosa jeffreyi, Abies concolor, Libocedrus decurrens, Pinus murrayana, few Abies magnifica & Quercus kel- loggii, the latter among shrubs under power line clear- ing); interstitial understory near river of Quercus vaccinifolium, Arctostaphylos patula, Ceanothus cor- dulatus, Populus tremuloides; denser, nearly chapar- ral shrub growth under clearing along S-facing slope below several parallel power lines (Prunus emarginata, Spiraea, Ceanothus velutinus, Castanopsis sempervirens in addition to above mentioned shrubs
