Cogswell 1950 actitis macularia June 17, June 20 6900 ft. 1 mi. SW Donner Pass, Glacer Co., Calif - 1 foraged along mud & debris-littered banks of the 3-4 ft. wide creek within forest where trees have been cleared for several paralleling power lines. This is 1 1/2 miles from nearest likely nesting locale (J. Van Norden). June 20 E. end Lake Van Norden, 6770 ft., Glacier Co., Calif - 3 adults were flushed from lake shore, here bordered by open grassy sedge meadow & some willow thickets. They foraged chiefly along the lake edge itself, over half-submerged logs, etc. Another was flushed from wet grassy area near pine forest border of meadow nearly 1/2 mile from the lake. In the p.m., we found a NEST with 4 eggs, placed on dry (barely) point of land about 3 feet from shallow water at minor indentation of the lakeshore. There are 6 inch sedges sparingly hiding the nest. An adult bird ran & then flew away from the nest without making any fuss as a group of 7 people came up toward it. This is in the same area where 3 birds seen this a.m. Eggs of Buteo boreas very abundant in shallow water near nest. June 30 This nest site is now under water, the level of the lake having risen a few inches (6±), and there is no sign of its eggs. Adults still in vicinity. July 2 July 18 July 24 " " " " E. side Boca Res., 5560 ft., Nevada Co., Calif - an individual with unspotted breast walking along stick littered shore.
