Falco sparverius
June 22 C side Boca Reservoir, 5600' ft. Nevada Co., Calif - 3 seen,
2 of them over open sagebrush flats & 1 over Jeffrey
pine forest, chasing a Swainson's Hawk (see acct. of that sp).
June 25- Sierraville vicinity, Sierra Co.; Beckwith, Plumas Co., Calif;
and 5 of Reno, Washoe Co., Nev - 1 to 3, in farmland areas
in each locality.
I also in latter locality on June 27.
June 28 5770 ft. 2 mi. W Boca Res. Nevada Co., Calif - a ♂ flew
from Jeffrey pines (open forest) bordering a mile-long
sagebrush & grassland valley.
June 30 Soda Springs, 6800 ft. Nevada Co., Calif - 1 flew low thru
open lodgepole - Jeffrey pine forest near Lake Van Vora,
hotly pursued by 3 Brewer's Blackbirds.
July 6 # Norden D.R. Sta. 6800', Placer Co., Calif - a ♂ was
found with a broken wing, lying on its back
under the many-wired telephone lines and
being beset by about 20 Brewer's Blackbirds.
They made short thrusts from nearby stances
on the ground, or hovered over the crippled
hawk. Their calls were raucous & the
reason I went over to investigate. I re-
trieved the hawk & turned it over to Byron
Davis at the Audubon Camp who kept it alive
about 10 days; but gangrene developed in
the wound so he dispatched it.
I think the hawk may have been fleeing
from the blackbirds when it hit the wires.
July 8 "Signal Hill" 7500 ft. 3/4 mi. WNW Donner Pass, Nevada Co., Calif.
3 cavorting together on breeze over open herb-covered
slope
