Cogswell 1950 Falco peregrinus July 1 Lake Van Norden, 6800 ft., Placer Co., Calif. - about sunset (20 min. before) an adult flew leisurely eastward toward & out across the lake, which is surrounded by red fir and/or lodgepole pine forest, with an open meadow at one end. The bird's large size, pointed wings, & slate blue back leave no doubt as to its identity. July 21 Bear Valley, 4570 ft., Placer-Neveda Co., Calif. - 1 in adult plumage was found perched near the top of a tall dead tree along the "river", here a creek at the bottom of a 10 ft. gully thru the middle of a broad grassy valley with scattered clumps of black oaks and a few pines. A Robin was scolding it from a range of 20+ ft. Upon approach of one observer (Geo. Treubel) to about 300 ft. the hawk flew and passed almost over him & on past a number of us watching - going out of site "up valley" to the East.
