Buteo swainsonii
June 17 Donner Peak, 8000+ ft., Placer Co., Calif. - I seen soaring high over rocky crest of the Sierra here, just N of open, smooth-topped Mt. Judah (a likely foraging area now bare of snow).
June 22 5650 ft., 2 mi. N Boca, Nevada Co., Calif. - Just before and after sundown one flew low over the open Jeffrey Pine forest (which has low sagebrush in all interstices) and returned to perch repeatedly in the tops of 3 tall pines overlooking the head of Boca Reservoir. On each flight it was harassed by Brewer's Blackbirds and/or a Sparrow Hawk, the latter also performing several, power dives at the large hawk while it was perked. A 15 minute search revealed no nest.
June 25 W side Sierra Valley, 4880 ft., Sierra Co., Calif. - a pair, both in light phase, soared over sagebrush and wet pasturland of the open valley. 2 were seen at separate points along Route 89 S. of Sierraville also.
July 9 Martin Val., 5850 ft., Placer Co., 3 mi. E, 1 1/2 mi. S Truckee, Calif - 2 flying over broad sagebrush valley where there was a pair present all summer in 1948.
July 12 6800 ft., 3 1/2 mi. E Mt. Rose, Carson Range, Nev. - I flying low over open Jeffrey pine forest at base of steep E slope.
July 23 Martin Val., [see above] - 2, both in light phase,
July 26 1 light phased individual perched on a 7 ft. high shrub.
- Geiger Grade, 5500 ft., 2 mi. E Steamboat Springs Washoe Co., Nev
1 soaring over sparse juniper: junipers woodland.
July 27 Crosser Co., 5700 ft., 1 1/3 mi. E, 3 1/2 mi. N Truckee, Nevada Co., Calif - I flying over sagebrush + grassland between arid forested slopes.
