Cogswell 1950 Butes jamaicensis 2 Aug. 4 Bear Valley, 4580 ft., Placer + Nevada Cos. Calif. - at least 2 immatures flying in short, circling jaunts from tall trees just S of valley, which is a broad grassy valley. I think it likely these are this year's fledglings, as they were doing a lot of screaming. Aug. 5 E side Dog Valley, 6000 ft., eastern Sierra Co. Calif. - 1 ad. & 1 imm. flying together low over a chaparral -covered slope just above an irrigated pasture. Aug. 6 Washoe Valley, 5000+ ft., Washoe Co., Nev. - 2 seen in flight. Aug. 9 Tahoe Meadows, 8800 ft., 2½ mi. S, 1 mi. E Mt. Rose, Carson Range, Nev. - 2 immatures flying over wet meadow bordered by lodgepole + silver pines. Aug. 10 E side Donner L., 6000 ft., Nevada Co. Calif. - 2 adults, apparently a pair, flew from steep forested slope out over Little Truckee R, 5800 ft. [see p. 1] - 2 seen, soaring separately. Aug. 21 Grosser Cr., 5700 ft., 1⅓ mi. E, 3½ mi. N Truckee, Nevada Co., Calif. - 1 ad., 1 imm., seen over similar arid valley. Both of these last 2 localities are Swainson's Hawk breeding areas.
