Accipiter striatus
Aug. 10 "Crow's Nest" peak, 7400 ft., 2 mi. SW Donner Pass, Placer Co.
Calif.- In early p.m. I flew from its perch
on the outer limb of a scraggly fir - circled
round the rocky peak, then soared out on
breeze blowing up over the cliffs S of the
peak, disappearing eventually on beyond
them over the valley of Onion Cr.
Aug. 14 near Sugar Bowl Lodge, 7000 ft., 1.2 mi. SS W Donner Pass.
I flew along edge of red fir - silver pine forest,
It was in gray plumage of adult.
Aug. 16 I circling high over Disney Mt. (just E of
"Crow's Nest") together with 2 sparrow
hawks which made a fine size criterion
at this extreme range of ½ mile, I
was using 9x binoculars to watch the 3
hawks "play" in the breeze which was
apparently quite suitable for easy
buoyant flight.
