Cogswell 1950 Anas strepera June 27 Little Rainbow Lake, 5020 ft., Washoe Co., Nevada - an estimated 20+ on this 30+ acre lake & adjacent marshy south arm. Some flew in obvious pairs (2+ males seen), others were in small flocks, apparently all ?? July 26 At least 2, perhaps many more, among the flock of several hundred ducks - all so wary that they flew before we could get close. Aug. 9 at least 1. Aug. 23 Now that the lake is so shallow & receded to half-size, I could make out close enough to the ducks to get a more careful estimate. An estimated 100 Gadwalls were mixed in the 800+ ducks here today. None were in the gray plumage of the breeding ?; several were seen flopping across the water but they were unable to take off (= eclipse molt ?). Some of the several broods of partly grown young on the lake may have belonged to some of the 4 Gadwalls seen. I think this number of birds may rep- sent some influx from marshes S of the lake (now dried up); but there have undoubtedly been many Gadwalls present here all Summer, at the not identified on each visit because of their wariness when our group of 25-35 persons approach.
