Pelecanus erythrorhynchos
June 25. Sierra Valley, 4900 ft., Sierra & Plumas Cos., Calif. - During the latter 1/2 of the forenoon several flocks totalling over 100 individuals soared & flapped their way southward up the valley. They were first noted entering the air above the valley from the NE (from Pyramid Lake nesting colony ?? - which is mi. away) and disappeared in the direction of Lake Tahoe. There were apparently good up-drafts over the hot sagebrush areas of the valley which they used to gain altitude.
July 9 S. end Lake Tahoe, 6230 ft., El Dorado Co., Calif. - 1 and 2 flew low over marshes S of lake.
July 19 Loomis, 410 ft., Placer Co., Calif. - flock of 24 circling at about 300 ft. altitude over blue oak covered low foothills about 11:30 a.m. They seemed to be moving gradually northward.
July 26 Little Washoe L., 5020 ft., Washoe Co., Nev. - 1 on water, taking off when group of people near the lake on foot.
Aug. 6 N. end Washoe L., 5010 ft., Washoe Co., Nev. - 15 were sitting on sandy mud shore, but flew off across water (with many geese also present) when 3 of us came to within 300 yards of them.
Aug. 9 Little Washoe L. [see above] - 2 seen, flying into away from lake.
Aug. 23 About 25 -- were swimming along & scooping up something from water occasionally, the lake now being a shallow reed & animal filled haunt. They flew away & up toward Tahoe when we approached.
