1960 Journal 10 April Pinto Basin, 1750' ft., Riverside Co., Calif. Clouds came in from the SW last night and are still with us. This evening Jim Underman & I drove the road between the darkhill- cholla patch to about five mi. + beyond the dirt road to NE across the basin. The evening was cool and a larger full moon at decks. From about 8 p.m. to 9:30 we saw a half dozen Plagomithus (once langemontis for sure) on the road and after 9:30 p.m. almost an equal number of Dipodamy. There was no pattern to their appearance after 10 p.m. we saw a dozen Lepus californicus and one Sylvilagus audoboni -- all in or near the Cholla Patch. DORs on road: one poor-will, one Lepus Californicus, 1 mi. W. of gravel pit and several Dipodomy (plus a snake). We picked up five geckos along the entire stretch of road. One quick glance at what appeared to be a coyote in a wash at 10:30 p.m. Mockingbird were heard singing along the route. 11 April I made a circuit 3/4 mi. E and 1/2 mi. S. of camp between 7: and 9: a.m. No lizards were seen, in an area of about five acres there was a concentration of Black-throated Sparrows and Brewer's Sparrows -- all in full song. They were shy. Watched one Black-throated Sparrow bring nesting material to a fence three times. The other individual came to nest site once but couldn't determine if it had incorporated the material in full into the nest. The nest was
