10 April Pinyon Wells to Pinto Basin, Riverside Co., Calif.
We left same at 2:00 p.m. and proceeded to the fork in
the road S. of Yucca Tank. There we turned east, flanking
a dark reddish range of mountains. Immediately S. of
this range is a dry lakebed of fine silt. Much of
the surface is covered by a sparse growth of Erodium
sp. dig and up to five inches high. The
appearance is that of a shortgrass prairie. Areas of
luscil foliage were found particularly east of the
road where it was up to 2 ft. high and green --
at the growing fruit stage. Only a few shrubs
were on this playa. Wildlaw Larks were heard & seen
to E. -- at least 2 individuals -- and difficult to
approach. I approached a ? Horned Lark
-- once it was on a 8" high rock, the other a 3 ft.
shrub. Both times I got within 20 yds of the bird.
Several other individuals seen flying. To the
south is a band 100 yds + of verbenia in bloom
before it gives way to a yucca forest. To the W.
short shrubs & Larea form a belt 1/2 mi. + before
Yucca appears. There is a smie W. of road in hills.
Yucca tank today -- a hole 1 ft. deep & 8" in diameter,
indicated damp earth. Proceeded to Bello Camp area
and down to Pinto Basin. Drowning Laves flying
up canyon. Add 2 Fales spawning at dry lake.
At mi. E. of the blade isolated hill near the Cholla
patch we turned off the road to N. at a gravel pit & went
1+ mi. N. toward sand dunes and camped.
