26 June ½ mi. E Ella Wt., 7,200 ft., Clover Wt., Lincoln Co, Canada of small pines & called. Never showed again.
got a calling gnatcatcher, saw more metholkes
& singing Solitary Violes. Collected another Grace
warbler - out of a tall mature pine. These birds
seem to act like olive warblers - gleaming in the
pine needles except this species is more active than
the latter. Backs to camp & dinner about 8: p.m.
saw 2 bluebirds fly by, a little later 2 nighthawks
flew W 100-xfd N of the ridge we are camped on.
One flew past camp while we were eating (6:45 p.)
at late dusk (8:30 +) heard a clucking which
sounded somewhat like a flickers polynotes
call, except higher & more scolding. Then a
night-hawk sized bird flew over - 25 ft
above ground, that all I but didn't get it.
it was dark & had larger wings than a
nighthawk - several birds out - one swagotta,
very large.
27 June Hunted on a hill SE of camp - open stand of pine
of all age classes with some stands of gambel oak.
saw 3 Grace warblers - only one song. Saw a good
sized hawk fly up into a mature ponderosa - there
was a stick nest 40 ft up on up hill (NW facing) tree
d could see a tail over the edge of the near - fixed
a half load at the nest & got the bird with 9's as it
went off. Upon skinning found internal parts
of a bird in crop - nothing to identify as to species.
