Christensen, R. E. 1963 Journal 26 June 1/2 mi. E Ella Mt., 7,200 ft., Clover Mt., Lincoln Co., Nevada. Went hunting between 5:15 & 6:30 p.m. Went E below the crest of ridge & hill to E. Steep N facing slope, dissected by sharp V gullies; about 70% covered with pine of all stages of growth - including a few large ponderosas & no few stumps from logging. Patches of Gambel oak chaparral - pine stands 3 to 5 ft. high, usually fairly open. Traces of small pale sized pines. An Actiolepis present the most in pine stands. Frequent areas of Artemisia, with young pines (we are camped in such an area - 1/2 mile in extent). Violet-queen Swallowtails (near a large pine 25 yds down road). Saw one hummingbird. Immediately saw a family of pygmy nuthatches - that an adult feeding an immature 35 ft up in a mature pine. Collected a grace warbler (45 ft+ up in a mature pine - not singing), Solitary Vireo (quiet, in young pine near bush), Contopus calling & foraging in a grove of young pine. At this point saw Buteo hawks in pine (mature) 30 yds away - upper breast cream colored, belly & flanks with marks, dark tail & back-wings - light terminal bar on tail. Heard a hawk calling - saw 100 yds away a mature Red-tail - approached, heard call of Stellar Jay - saw 2 at a distance & they disappeared down hill. Another adult Red-tail came by - believe a pair with at least one young. Roated & speckled for Jays - one came near behind cover of
