Christian, John 1963 Journal 25 June Macko Canyon, 8,800 ft., Spring Mtus., Clark Co., Nevada a wood of ants in its hill. There were to one side of the series of holes - a number of 1" deep "exploratory" hole. The elevation here is slightly over 8800 ft. While finishing examining the situation, I noticed a horse watching me on the ridge 75 yds. to the N- the ridge is about 35 yds away - uphill. It was a mare, brown, thin, with a stocky long haired calf with it. After watching me for several minutes they walked down the opposite side of ridge into the MacFarland drainage. Went up to ridge & went on NE - all species of conifers, but more p. aristata here. Travel pavement. Went down a steep slope with dense young conifers, hit a spring - shortingsters - and grass, well grazed - with horse tracks & dung. Found a trail - was used by horses & came out at the end of the road. Near camp shot one of two Vico gilaos they were chasing, singing, etc. in same pale sized ponderosa - after I shot one flew 50 yds uphill in large ponderosa & sang continuously for several minutes before flying on uphill. Many Lassin 7 inches in main canyon near camp - many feeding young. As I approached camp saw a Peacoe - shot 'em. 26 June We packed up the trucks & were out of the Canyon by 9 a.m., photographed in canyon, near to Lee Canyon for male, & photos then headed toward Las Vegas.
