9 April Lower Carrington Flat, 4,800 ft., Joshua Tree Nat'l Monument, Riverside Co., Calif. Below the large series of boulders. Three Mourning Doves were seen on the rocks. One tried to copulate with the other two individuals. Each of the birds so advanced upon flew - the third one followed as they flew down the stream bed. Linnets and Lawrence Goldfinches were in the trees about the pool so I stationed myself eight feet from the pole with a 135 mm. lens and took photos of Laurence Goldfinch, drinking. Twice a pair lighted three feet from the pole & hopped to the water when other JT flew directly into the hole. The first JT immediate flew as the other JT and chased them off & pursued up the canyon wall. There was considerable fighting. Shortly the a JT joined the female at the pool. Earlier in the a.m. I flushed two Sparrows in a shrub area on the uplands N of camp. They flew when I was 16-15 ft. away. Both flew 35 yds. down canyon & lighted on the ground under the shrubs. No nest was found nor anything out of the ordinary. They appeared rather rufous in flight. One Red-tailed Hawks seen in a.m. We struck camp about 2 p.m. and went down the road to a turn off to the west. Entered Upper Carrington Flat. The bunch grass is especially lush. Most of the synecas are in fullassan
