19 June 3 mi. N Charleston Peaks 8,400 ft. Spring Mtus, Clark Co.; [illegible]
Red & Fitch went down Lee Canyon early - shot and bow
warbler in camp. Walked up to ridge to W then circled 5 &
came down one of the canyons to camp from SW. Near the
top of the ridge Pinus aristata & P. flexilis predominant.
Ponderosa drops out at about 9,000 ft. Fir goes to top
but not in exposed sites. Saw near top ? williamson
sepsucker, pair of bush tits, Clark Nutcracker, Mt. Chickadee
and collected a hermit thrush & an Empidonax (#1038 )
Heard Cassin Finches. Empidonax are by far the most
common bird. Saw no nutatches. Saw 2 ? W. Tanagers
in fir areas. Back at camp shot a creeper, an
Empidonax (#1040) and chipping Sparrow. Up high
saw 2 juncos, but couldn't approach. The other
Empidonus was shot at about 9,100 ft (#1039). Saw one
flicker - extremely weary; head bluebirds up canyon &
about camp. Photographed on ridge W of camp.
Walked down to gravel road at 7:50 p.m. Shot a
thrush. The last Violet-green Swallow was seen
at 8:20 p.m. At this time two poorwills began
calling from the hill N of camp sites. They called
continuously for 2 minutes - then quiet until
about 8:45 - same 2, plus one flew down at the
meadow. One flew over me high - it is & is
sailed off to a dark hill side of small juniper,
& rocks. Called several times. Quiet night - back
to camp - no stimulated answers. Still no bats
out in the evening - The only bat I have
