17 June 3 mi. N. Charleston Peak, 8,900 ft. Spring Mtus., Clark Co., Nev.
Saw a flicker in road near camp shot at it & is flew
to fire - a long shot got it. To camp - heard flickers
went down canyon 50-yds & shot it. Dave Ayreab &
sapsucker came in close got it also. If these birds
turn out to be R & F's, I believe they are mated
pairs for all were collected in about the same area.
Waxbling wrens over 25-yds below tent. Lots of loud
singing. Saw 1 audubon warbler. Most bird
activity, especially singing is in canyon bottoms
aspen prannment. Many singing Cassin finches
Puthatches high and quiet. At least one pair
of darker green swallows flying over camp site.
Saw one Red-tailed Hawk soar over. That Eupidonus
in fir on V facing slope.
* They - the 2 pair of woodpeckers - were probably
mated pairs.
At 3:15 p.m. we were shining
in the tent when we heard a roaring of heavy
wing beats - I ran out of the tent an on the
rocky hill side to the N, slowly walking up
hill was a turkey. It disappeared up hill, after
Red & Fletcher saw it. The only feature about the
bird which was about 40 yds away when I
first saw it was the ocher-tan band at the
end of the tail - the rest of the bird was just
dark. Could this be from the stables a mile
below - or an introduction. Warm clear day with
small fluffy cumuli passing over.
