17 June 3 mi.N. Charleston Crk, 8,900 ft. Spring Mtus., Clark Co., Nev.
We had breakfast at 6:15 with the sun well up down the canyon. I headed up draw to SW to the saddle to the next drainage to S on main Lee Canyon. Heard many thrashers but did not see any - saw 2 turkey flycatchers but they can't be approached easily. At the saddle there is a road from E. and winds around contour of a round head-drainage basin & appears to go to saddle on main drainage crest - perhaps down Clark Canyon. The majority of the country seen is open forest - mainly pine with little or no ground cover - just shale talus. Went to peak SE of camp & zig-zagged down. Very steep, NW facing slope of sub mature sized white fir - now 1-2 ft. in diameter. The trees do not form a complete canopy but are the densest for visible at this elevation. The ground has same parent-rock material but heavier needle litter, fallen trees and about 14 case of Juniperus comminiscens in dense patches. Little bird life in evidence - no chipmunks seen. Shot a silent clickadee from this area. When I approached the bottom of this hill - 75 yds down canyon from our camp site I heard a sapucker & gave horned owl call - it came in 8 ft. away on branch of fir - shot with .38. Then when a bit lower, heard bluebird & saw one above my level in huge p. ponderosa in canyon bottom - it was an top dead branch.
