Christina, She, 1963 Journal 16 June 3 mi. N Charleston Peak, 8,400 ft., Spring Mtws. Clear. Near. Left Las Vegas at 10:30 a.m. & proceeded to Lee Canyon. Near mouth of canyon in pinion-juniper area saw: large unidentified Butte, Sparrowhawk (only one seen in this region except one at Hidden Forest Canyon), Maskingbird and a D.O.R. Jack Rabbit (this & helicon is the only Lepus seen down here, except the one & shot & photographed at Wicgrass Spring at Hidden Forest). We drove to McD Williams Camp ground area & end of road at ski tow, then to camp site - about 1 1/4 mi. up (dry) stream from the Lee Guard Station (not open yet). There is a grassy meadow near the station. Set up camp in a snug manner in less than two hrs. Have seen here: warbling Vireos, many broad-tailed hummers, heard flicker, many Cassin Finches, Hermit thrushes, Red-tailed Hawks and Rufous-crowned sparrows. The camp site is at a fork in Canyon, with aspen, many huge P. ponderosa, second conifer - white fir, next P. aristata, and several "limber pines". Many have shade areas, and numerous seedling conifers in canyon bottoms. A heavily wooded hill to SE (NW facing) - clear coal. Little grand cave, many downed timber (some cut) only a few snags. Shot a Cassin Finch singing in pine, and a hermit thrush in aspen grace - 10 ft. up in dead aspen. Many dusky flycatchers.
