15 June Hidden Forest Canyon, 7,900 ft., Sheep Range, Clark C. Drew
Up early and broke camp at about 8:30 a.m. We
stopped near the mouth of the canyon ( ) and
collected some samples of shrubs. One shrub
looked like an oak - but no acorns. Out on
the extensive alluvial fan at mouth of canyon there
is an extensive forest of Yucca lucida - the
was the tree farm as in California. The work is
a deeply entrenched arroyo in the fan. Yucca
baccata in pod stage - if individuals reproduced
this year (apparently may did not) - and fairly
numerous. Yucca mahavensis farth down
bare of fan near Corn Spring but not abundant.
Stopped by the hg at Cain Spring - Hansen nor
at home; gas water tanks filled. Went to Kyle
Canyon in the Spring Wks., had lunch near the
end of the road & more down to Forest Service
office to get a fire permit. They are just getting
organized for this fire season & probably will
not be ready till end of the month. Lightning
set fires seem to be particularly warmpose
in this area, especially in the higher, inaccessible
regions. On to Las Vegas - shopped for food,
did laundry, had a fine dinner. Stayed at the
Apache Motel - rather rundown Hollywood modern
Saw highschool paraging over down town Area.
The Ranger at Kyle Canyon claimed to have
a D.O.R. golden Eagle above the F.S. unit.
