Christmas Eve, 1963 Journal 12 June Hidden Forest, 7,900 ft., sheep range, Clark Co., Nev. None of us have ever seen a sheep here, or anything larger than a porcupine. This afternoon after 2:30 I went down canyon to photograph and pick up a few plants to press. Near the dammed log saw an Olive-sided Flycatcher & collected some. It was seen twice to light - both times on lower limbs of ponderosa 15'± from the grand & 3-5 ft. from the trunk. I heard no call. About 12 swallows (V-g) and 3 white throated swifts were seen flying over & up & down canyon. The swifts remain well over tree height - so difficult to even try to shoot. Chipmunks are abundant - I believe the most abundant are at this elevation & lower is E. dorsalis. I have not seen any Rock Squirrels since we arrived in camp here - we saw them lower down the canyon near the mouth. Red tailed hawks into Las Vegas at 1 p.m. - will scent and further, camps in the Chesteron's - At 7:45 p.m. I left cabin & proceeded ½ mi. down canyon - walking slowly with piping owl calls at intervals - no response from anything. At 8:30 I started back with same routine except with Flammulated calls. No responses until fallen log across road when are answered four times from fir's up the hill - the calls were sharp & more like "hoot" than "poop"
